Low frequency, intermolecular solvent dynamics in the vicinity of a photoexcited dye molecule have been probed directly with time-resolved THz pulse spectroscopy. We compare and contrast two distinct dye / solvent systems: Betaine-30 in chloroform and TBNC in toluene. The transient process for the former is dominated by an electronic response of the photoexcited dye molecule, whereas the latter does not display the polarization dependence expected for an electronic response.
