The time evolution of the change in the low-frequency response function for a solvent (i.e., frequency-dependent absorption coefficient and index of refraction) following photoexcitation is experimentally determined for the first time. Unlike typical time resolved laser studies, the spectrum of the low frequency collective solvent modes are monitored rather than properties of the solute. We have investigated the dynamics of chloroform in response to photoexcitation of TBNC dye dissolved therein. We present frequency domain representations of this evolution with roughly 200 fs temporal resolution.
