Research The Holland group studies transition-metal complexes of inexpensive metals, with the goal of understanding their reactions and increasing their potential for use in catalysis. In order to accomplish this goal, we develop expertise in biological inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, synthesis, mechanistic techniques, and spectroscopy. We have developed complexes with metal-ligand multiple bonds and complexes that break multiple bonds in organic and inorganic substrates. In order to boost reactivity, we often target complexes in which the metal has a low coordination number of three.

Our primary focus of research has been on iron complexes for nitrogen fixation, which is important for agriculture and the environment. Our studies have also addressed solar production of hydrogen, catalytic alkene and fluorocarbon reduction, and fundamental organometallic mechanisms.
